Best NBA Picks for January 30, 2017
Isaiah Thomas ($9.4k DraftKings, $10k FanDuel)
Fading Thomas in cash games when he draws a plus matchup at home simply doesn’t make much sense. He’s been an absolute beast over the course of December and January with averages of 31.2 PPG and 6.6 APG during those months. He’s been murdering teams down the stretch and is even more deadly at home, where IT averages 30.1 PPG on 49% FG shooting this season. Tonight the Celtics should be challenged by Andre Drummond and an athletic Pistons team, while Thomas should demolish a Detroit defense that allows the eight-most FPPG (44.51) to opposing PGs this year.
Andre Drummond ($7.7k DraftKings, $8k FanDuel)
The aforementioned Drummond was a beast on Friday with Hassan Whiteside out for the Heat and he should be a problem once again for a Celtics team that might be without their starting center Al Horford (groin) this evening. Even with Big Al active, Boston ranks 27th in total rebounding and coughs up the eighth-most FPPG (48.53) to opposing centers this season. Drummond is averaging 20 PPG and 17 RPG over 2 meetings against Boston this year and averaged 16.8 PPG on 54% FG shooting against the undersized Celtics last season.
Kyrie Irving ($8.2k DraftKings, $8.6k FanDuel)
He’s fresh off a double-double with 29 points and 10 dimes in a badly needed win over the Thunder on Sunday. Irving remains a fantastic option with Kevin Love not making the trip to Dallas tonight. When Love is off the court, Irving leads the Cavs with a 36.3% Usage Rate and averages 1.19 FPs per minute. Tonight he’ll be facing a veteran Mavs team that is falling apart at this stage in the season and will have to rotate a couple of inexperienced PGs in Yogi Ferrell, Seth Curry and a hobbled Devin Harris out of necessity. That’s food for Kyrie in what should be another W for Cleveland.
Mid Tier DFS NBA Picks
Jae Crowder ($6.1k DraftKings, $6.3k FanDuel)
His recent success may be due in part to the absence of Avery Bradley and recently, Al Horford, but Crowder is playing great regardless of who is available for the Celtics. The sharpshooting SF is endearing himself to the home fans with averages of 19.3 PPG on 50.7% FG shooting over his last 6 appearances and he’s been much more comfortable at home, where he’s actually shooting 97% (34-of-35) at the FT line this year. If Bradley and/or Horford remain out tonight, Crowder will be forced to step up while draining outside shots if the Pistons defense sells out to contain Thomas.
James Johnson ($5.8k DraftKings, $6k FanDuel)
Apparently losing some playing time to 10-day contract recipient Okaro White has lit a fire under Johnson, because he’s responded with two fantastic performances in as many appearances. Often a forgotten option with Goran Dragic leading the backcourt and Dion Waiters grabbing all the SportsCenter highlights, JJ is still putting up versatile lines and should continue to get heavy playing time with Justise Winslow (shoulder) out for the year. Tonight he faces a Nets team that gives up the most PPG (114.7) in the NBA this season and ranks in the bottom 5 against just about every position, so the Heat’s Swiss Army Knife should do a bit of everything in this plus matchup.
Bargain Tier DFS NBA Picks
Tristan Thompson ($4.6k DraftKings, $4.9k FanDuel)
With Kevin Love inactive tonight, TT is worth a look in a prime matchup at Dallas. The Mavericks rank dead last in total rebounding and correspondingly allow the most RPG (18.67) to opposing centers over the last month. Thompson found his offense with 19 points and added 12 rebounds, 4 blocks and 4 steals to exceed value by a wide margin yesterday, so he’s definitely worth a look on the second half of Cleveland’s B2B set.
Channing Frye ($3.4k DraftKings, $3.8k FanDuel)
Love’s likely replacement for the Cavs comes at a significant discount on DraftKings and Frye has plenty of upside on that DFS site due to his ability to knock down threes. The stretch four is posting a 20.7% Usage Rate and averaging 0.85 FPs per minute with Love off the floor and he’s been a decent enough punt play while playing under 20 minutes over his last several appearances. Tonight he should log 20-30 minutes as a replacement for Love and he’s likely to exceed value against a Mavs team that ranks dead last in opponents 3PT shooting (.396%) this season.
If, Then Player
If Al Horford remains out, Kelly Olynyk and Jaylen Brown will enter the discussion as high-upside value plays for Boston.
