Best NBA Picks for January 27, 2017

LeBron James ($10.2k DraftKings, $10.8k FanDuel)
You have to assume that the Cavs will wake up at some point and start throttling the weaker teams in the East. Tonight is a prime opportunity for them to get back in the win column as they host the lowly Nets, a team that gives up the most PPG (114.7) and rank 28th in total rebounding this year. LeBron was monster once again while playing 44-plus minutes in a third straight appearance on Wednesday, but his team still came up short in an OT loss. The King should lead the Cavs (-14.5) to a comfortable win tonight, yet he’ll have to put up big numbers to do it given how top-heavy their roster remains.

Kyle Lowry ($8.6k DraftKings, $8.6k FanDuel)
DeMar DeRozan appears unlikely to return to action before the week is over and that should force Lowry into load-carrying mode once again. The Raptors PG played 82 minutes and attempted 44 FGs on a B2B set earlier this week, as his Usage Rate (30%) without DDR on the floor continues to increase. He managed to exceed value against a tough Grizzlies defense on Wednesday and now he’s facing a Bucks team that’s slightly more vulnerable on the perimeter. Lowry is averaging just 18.5 PPG but shooting 50% (12-of-24) over 2 meetings with Milwaukee this season, so you can extrapolate his numbers into much higher production with his all-star teammate out.

Goran Dragic ($7.5k DraftKings, $7.2k FanDuel)
The Heat are very shorthanded in the backcourt and that’s led to a couple of breakout games for Dion Waiters, but he should draw Jimmy Butler on defense while Dragic is free to operate against either the aging Dwyane Wade or one of the Bulls disgruntled PGs tonight. The Dragon is averaging 22.8 PPG, 6 APG and 5.6 RPG over his last 5 appearances and he’s been attacking the paint while shooting an efficient 52% from the field during that span. With Hassan Whiteside (ankle) off the floor this season, Dragic is sporting a 30.2% Usage Rate and averaging 1.06 FPs per minute, and Whiteside is likely to be either inactive or consistently ineffective once again.

Mid Tier DFS NBA Picks

Dwyane Wade ($7k DraftKings, $7.9k FanDuel)
Assuming he can get his teammates to pass him the ball and set screens after throwing them under the bus following Wednesday’s loss to the Hawks, Wade should be in line for a big game at home against his former team. Miami is giving up 22.57 PPG to opposing SGs over the last month and has become much more vulnerable on the perimeter with Dion Waiters taking over at the 2, while D-Wade will be motivated to prove that Waiters isn’t his replacement as the new Heat closer. Not only did the veteran play on both ends of a B2B set, he played fantastic in both games and he’s now produced 84 points over his last 3 games as he looks to lead the Bulls out of their collective rut.

Aaron Gordon ($5.4k DraftKings, $5.2k FanDuel)
Both Gordon and Elfrid Payton should benefit from the probable absence of Evan Fournier (foot), but Payton is a bit more of a volatile option and his individual matchup isn’t as strong this evening. The Celtics are strong against opposing PGs but weak on the boards, as they rank 28th in total rebounding and struggle to defend the paint. Gordon is sporting a 22.2% Usage Rate and averaging 0.83 FPs per minute with Fournier off the floor and he’s posting solid averages of 11.2 PPG, 5.8 RPG and 3.2 APG despite shooting poorly (.393 FG%) over his last 5 appearances, because he’s usage remains secure.

Bargain Tier DFS NBA Picks

Tony Parker ($4.5k DraftKings, $4.7k FanDuel)
Parker is expected to return from a four-game absence tonight and he should be well rested ahead of a plus matchup. The Pelicans are giving up the ninth-most PPG (106.2) in the NBA this year and have very little chance of stopping the Spurs ultra-sophisticated offense, which will have Parker back at the controls. With Pau Gasol out and Kawhi Leonard potentially inactive, Parker might return with a bang against a Pelicans squad that coughs up the third-most FPPG (45.88) and most PPG (25.34) to opposing PGs this season.

Norman Powell ($4.6k DraftKings, $4.2k FanDuel)
He’s no longer a bona fide punt play at this rapidly rising price tag, but Powell will still definitely be worth a look if DeRozan remains out for the Raptors. He played 33 minutes and attempted the second-most FGs on his team in a narrow loss at Memphis and draws an easier matchup tonight at home against Milwaukee. The Bucks are giving up the second-most PPG (26.6) to opposing SGs over the last month and Powell has produced 37 points while seeing dramatically increased usage in the absence of DDR this week.

Jeff Green ($4k DraftKings, $3.9k FanDuel)
The Magic were forced to play an unconventional lineup on Wednesday with Fournier and D.J. Augustin (ankle) inactive and they’ll be forced to turn to Green as their starting SG once again if both of those players can’t suit up in Boston tonight. Green played well for his part with 13 points and 7 boards over 34 minutes in a loss to Chicago and he’s going to be a very solid value play if he sees close to that amount of playing time against his former team. Boston is vulnerable against athletic forwards with length, as they’ve been dismantled by Washington’s tandem of Markieff Morris and Otto Porter on separate occasions this year, so perhaps Green and Aaron Gordon will keep Orlando in the game tonight.

If, Then Player

If Hassan Whiteside is out, you can use Goran Dragic, Dion Waiters and Willie Reed in any format. Okaro White also came out of nowhere to outplay James Johnson at the 4 for Miami and he may be worth a look either way.
