DFS PGA Targets

After a week off for the PGA TOUR, we are back in business with a monster week for the Open Championship!

Because it is a major, DraftKings is offering another Milly Maker tournament so this week is as good as any to hit the nuts for a million dollars.

The Open Championship will be hosted at Royal Troon Golf Club in South Ayrshire, Scotland. This is a par 71 course that measures 7,190 yards. This is a links style course that favors accuracy with hard to hit fairways and greens.

KEY STATS:

Par 4 Scoring

SG:Around-The-Green

Proximity 50-125 yards

As always, SG:T2G, SG:Putting and Course History will all be sprinkled in to help us figure out which golfers to target from week to week.

$TUD PLAYS:

Dustin Johnson $12,000
Odds To Win: 8-1
Expected Ownership: 25%

When it rains it pours. DJ now has back to back wins coming into this week. He has been nothing short of dominant lately and has a good Open Championship track record with multiple top 20 finishes. He is ranked second in SG:T2G and 10th in SG:Approach this season. He is also T1 in the key range of 50-125 yards this week.

Rory Mcllroy $11,900
Odds To Win: 9-1
Expected Ownership: 16%

Rory has four top five finishes in his last six starts worldwide including his win at the Irish Open. His most recent finish was a solo third at the French Open. He is an excellent links style golfer and is a former Open Championship winner in 2014. He is ranked first in SG:Off-The-Tee and top 25 in SG:Around-The-Green this season. He is likely to be popular but he still makes for an excellent pivot off DJ and Day.

Adam Scott $10,600
Odds To Win: 22-1
Expected Ownership: 13%

Scott is going to be one of my favorite plays on the board this week. He has an excellent track record at this event and is the only golfer in the field that has finished in the top 10 at the Open Championship the past four seasons. He is coming into this week with four top 20s in his last five starts including a T10 at the WGC-Bridgestone. He won the Honda Classic earlier this season which has been recognized as a corollary course for Royal Troon. Lastly, he is ranked in the top 25 in GIR% and is first on TOUR in SG:T2G and SG:Approach.

VALUE PLAYS:

Matt Kuchar $7,800
Odds To Win: 66-1
Expected Ownership: 25%

Matt Kuchar is going to be one of the most popular plays this week aside from DJ and Day but it’s hard to suggest a fade here. He is running hot with five top six finishes in his last six events including a T3 last time out at the WGC-Bridgestone. He is ranked 12th in SG:T2G and is top 35 in SG:Around-The-Green, SG:Approach, and Driving Accuracy. He is simply too cheap this week.

Marc Leishman $7,400
Odds To Win: 80-1
Expected Ownership: 6%

With many people going to be looking at Scott Piercy for the same price, Leishman is an interesting pivot play this week. Leishman has two top 20 finishes in the month of June and has finished in the top 20 two of the last three seasons at the Open Championship. He is ranked in the top 35 in SG:Around-The-Green and top 25 in Par 4 Scoring. Leishman provides high upside at a cheap price and expected low ownership this week.

Francesco Molinari $7,000
Odds To Win: 125-1
Expected Ownership: 7%

Molinari is coming into this week with two straight top 10s including a solo second at the French Open. He has also finished in the top 20 in two of the last three Open Championships. He is ranked in the top 20 in SG:T2G and SG:Approach. He is also 35th in SG:Around-The-Green and 40th in Proximity from 50-125 yards. At only 7k, Molinari is an excellent way to fit some high cost firepower into your lineups this week!

Gary Woodland $6,300
Odds To Win: 175-1
Expected Ownership: 5%

Woodland has finished in the top 30 in six of his last seven starts. I understand that Royal Troon isn’t the perfect course for Woodland but he has shown in the past that he can play well even on accuracy courses. Woodland ranks in the top 20 in SG:T2G and SG:Approach. He is also top 35 in Par 4 Scoring and second in Par 5 scoring this season. He is way too cheap this week and I cannot stress that enough.
