Strengths
The Kansas City Chiefs had a respectable year last year with the 2nd fewest passing yards allowed in 2014. They also return all of their starters from last year and gain Eric Berry and a couple highly selected corner backs. This unit should again be solid in 2015 as they have no real superstars but play very well together. They rarely give up big plays or make big plays but have a bend but don’t break attitude when it comes to coverage.
Weaknesses
The suspension of Sean Smith for the first 4 games of the regular season means that the #18 overall pick from the most recent NFL Draft will be asked to start immediately. Marcus Peters has the perfect size to be a successful corner in this league but is a bit of a headcase at times throughout his college career. Facing better competition it will be important to see how he handles immediately jumping in and being asked to start.
Overall Outlook
The Chiefs were solid against the pass last year, but did fail to force many turnovers as they had just six interceptions. That being said, their starting unit is composed of corners Sean Smith and Phillip Gaines, and safeties Ron Parker and Husain Abdullah. In addition, they drafted cornerback Marcus Peters in the first round of this year’s draft and used a third round pick on corner Steven Nelson. Peters brings the big playmaking ability that this secondary lacked last season. Despite being poor in the turnover department, this secondary was one of the best in the pass rush and allowed the second fewest passing yards per game. With early matchups against the Broncos and then the Packers before getting Sean Smith back from injury, I will closely monitor how Peters performs in week 1 but if he seems to be struggling he will definitely continue to do so in the tough matchups early on. Depth will be a concern until Sean Smith returns and they have juicy matchups to target until that time.
