Strengths
The Miami Dolphins surrendered the 12th most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. Their biggest offseason loss was Cortland Finnegan as the team parted ways with him, soon after he retired. They addressed it by signing several corners (listed above) and drafted Bobby McCain in the fifth round. Another big acquisition for the team was defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The reason I mention this is because having him up front adds some value to the secondary. There’s a good chance that he’ll be pressuring the quarterback more often, causing less time for a play to develop, and forcing the opposing quarterbacks to rush there passes; essentially making the secondary’s job much easier.
Weaknesses
Brent Grimes is a capable corner but his best years might definitely be behind him. He is on a slow progression downward so if he seems to be struggling early on he will definitely be a corner to target for DFS matchups. Reports out of camp are that Brice McCain has beaten out Jamar Taylor for the starting corner role opposite Grimes. McCain is a smaller corner who will bump into the slot in nickel and dime packages. If he holds onto the job all season he will have games that we can exploit him on the outside with bigger, physical receivers.
Overall Outlook
While they were not a shutdown defense by any means, only six receivers went over 100 yards in any given game. Jordy Nelson, Emmanuel Sanders, Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Sammy Watkins, and Eric Decker were the only receivers that were able to go over the century mark against Miami. So while some numbers may gear you towards stacking against the Dolphins, this really isn’t a defense to target often when creating your DFS lineups.
