Strengths
Taking over the defensive coordinator position in 2015 for the Washington Redskins will be Joe Barry after spending 3 years as the linebackers coach in San Diego. He named Perry Fewell to be his defensive backs coach so we should expect some changes to the scheme of this backfield in 2015. If things carry over from Barry’s days with the Chargers then they should be a more aggressive blitzing defense which will result in more man to man coverage on the outside. Chris Culliver was signed in the offseason from the 49ers. He graded out as one of the top cover corners according to ProFootballFocus in 2014. The Redskins need him to continue to perform at this level if they have any chance of stopping opposing teams wide receivers in 2015.
Weaknesses
No defensive backfield has more turnover from 2014 to 2015 then the Washington Redskins. This could result in some early growing pains as all of these guys will either be new, coming back from injury or playing significant snaps for the first time. DeAngelo Hall tries to return from the Achilles tear that cost him the majority of the 2014 season. If he can return to his 2013 form then this backfield should take a major step forward. But he has continued to get banged up during training camp and into preseason, if he continues to miss time it could be ugly due to the lack of depth behind him. The Redskins traded for Dashon Goldson this offseason after he spent 2014 with the Bucs. He was absolutely atrocious in coverage in 2014 but the Redskins are betting a change of scenario will do him some good. I would be willing to bet against that as I think we will see Goldson continue to struggle with his new team in Washington.
Overall Outlook
Although I do like the signing of Culliver in the offseason I do not think this defensive backfield has what it takes to compete with some of the prolific wide receivers in the league. I think people will miss targeting them in week 1 against the Dolphins and week 2 against the Rams but overlooking these matchups could cost DFS players some money. I would be looking to get a couple Tannehill and Foles shares in the early part of the season before everyone hops on the bandwagon in weeks 3 (Giants), 4 (Eagles) and 5 (Falcons).
