Strengths
The Windy City hasn’t seen a defense that will play like this in more than a decade. This will be a tough, aggressive blitzing defense. Early on we will see a number of growing pains as personal question marks make up a lot of the defensive starters but in time this defense could turn over quickly. Vic Fangio wants to provide one thing on defense and that is chaos as he tries to put his players in the best position to attack the offense. Kyle Fuller will be expected to take another step forward as he showed quite a bit of promise in his rookie year. He will not be playing umbrella cover three this year as he will be asked to play more bump and run man to man coverage in this aggressive scheme. Again like I said earlier along with the rest of the defense, I expect Kyle Fuller to have some early growing pains but I could see him developing into a very nice cornerback in this scheme. That does not mean we will not have the opportunity to pick on him early in DFS action however.
Weaknesses
On the other corner side after the Bears released Tim Jennings this is Alan Balls job to lose but Tracy Porter may have something to say in that. The others will fill in during nickel and dime situations. Alan Ball offers the kind of height that Ed Donatell has been known to covet at his starting corner slots measuring 6’2”. He came over from the Jaguars after injuring his biceps in 2014 and only playing in 7 games. His career year was in 2013 when profootballfocus graded him out at 7.5 overall and 7.9 in pass coverage after starting in 15 games that year. We should see him win the starting corner spot out of training camp with Tracy Porter moving to the slot nickel cornerback spot. Another new addition to this backfield for 2015 will be Antrel Rolle at the starting free safety spot. Some might say he is done after getting absolutely thrashed all of 2014. Does he have anything left in the tank? This will be the biggest question for this defensive backfield heading into 2015. If Antrel Rolle can get back to his pro bowl caliber playing days then this unit will make quick strides toward the nasty defense that Vic Fangio is known for. But if he has a repeat of last year then this defensive backfield will be one to target week in and week out again in 2015.
Overall Outlook
Especially after they cut Tim Jennings I expect to see a ton of growing pains especially early on for the Chicago Bears. They will be a defense to target wide receivers against week in and week out. Kyle Fuller again got eaten alive by the Green Bay wide receivers and has to be one of the most enticing defensive matchups week in and week out right now. It’s possible he is just not a very good corner so we should continue to target receivers against him until he proves otherwise.
