Rams at 49ers odds

Rams at 49ers picks: Moneyline

The Niners stumble into their third straight home game off of back-to-back losses. They were dropped 25-20 in Week 4 to a then-winless Philadelphia Eagles squad before suffering the 26-point shellacking at the hands of the Dolphins. All three of the team’s quarterbacks – Jimmy GaroppoloNick Mullens, and C.J. Beathard – played in those two games. Garoppolo was benched in Week 5 after completing just seven of 17 pass attempts for 77 yards; he threw two picks and no touchdowns. He was listed with an ankle injury on Wednesday’s initial injury report but should be medically available for SNF.

The Rams have won two straight games for the second time this season. They enter at 2-1 on the road and 4-0 against NFC opponents. QB Jared Goff had his second 300-yard passing game of the season against Washington in Week 5. He enters with career highs in completion percentage (71.7), yards per attempt (9.0), quarterback rating (108.8), and QBR (75.6).

The 49ers’ injury woes don’t end with Garoppolo. They have 13 players on the Reserve/Injured list to just three for the Rams. Niners LB Kwon Alexander (ankle), CB Dontae Johnson (groin), and CB Emmanuel Moseley (concussion) were also on the injury report and are likely headed for questionable tags. The Rams are expected to be at full health.

Take the Rams to win as modest road favorites with a fan-less home field not having been kind to the 49ers; they’re 0-3 at home this year. The Rams have the more efficient offense and the Niners still have too many injuries on defense. Garoppolo’s lingering ankle injury will be a detriment against a Rams defense sharing the NFL lead with 20 sacks.

The pick: Rams (-180 or better)

Rams at 49ers picks: Against the spread

The 49ers opened as 3-point home favorites last week. The line flipped after San Francisco’s lopsided home loss to the Dolphins while Los Angeles cruised past Washington on the road. LA is now favored for the third straight week; San Francisco is an underdog for the first time this season.

The Rams are 3-2 ATS this season. They failed to cover as 1.5-point road dogs against the Buffalo Bills and as 13.5-point home favorites against the New York Giants. The Niners are 2-3 ATS with all three losses against spreads of 7 or more points. The winning team covered the spread in four of the last five head-to-head meetings in which LA went 3-2 ATS.

Los Angeles has won by margins of 3, 18, 8, and 20 points with a 3-point loss this season. While San Francisco hasn’t lost by fewer than 4 points, back the Niners to keep it within 3 in the rivalry matchup. They’re the healthiest they’ve been since Week 1 and have the rushing attack to match the Rams and push for a split in time of possession. We’ll lean to 49ers +3, but prefer a line of +3.5 where it can be found. AVOID any line of +2.5 or lower.

The lean: 49ers +3 or better

Rams at 49ers picks: Over/Under (total)

The total for Sunday Night Football in Week 6 is set at a number ranging from 50.0 to 51.5. It’s the highest point projection of the season for San Francisco and the highest line since Week 1 for Los Angeles. The Niners are 3-2 against the Over/Under and top the projections by 1.6 points per game, while the Rams are 2-3 O/U and fall an average of 2.7 points shy of the line.

The Rams and Niners rank 13th and 18th, respectively, in points per game at 27.2 and 24.8. They both rank in the five easiest strengths of schedule thus far, with the 49ers first and Rams fourth. Still, San Francisco has scored more than 20 points in just two of five games (both wins). Los Angeles was held to 20 or fewer points in two of four wins.

Both teams will want to focus on the run and control the clock. This will slow down the pace of the game, limit quick scores through the air, and the number of possessions for both sides. Bet the UNDER with neither side wanting a shootout.

The pick: UNDER 50.5 or better

Rams to score first and win: Yes +150

Los Angeles has struck first in four of five games this season. The only time it didn’t was its 35-32 loss to the Bills in Week 3 in which it trailed 21-3 at the half. San Francisco opened with a 10-0 lead against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 but has given up the first lead in each of its last two losses.
