MLB DFS & Lineups & Picks for August 22, 2018

There are 10 games on the main MLB DFS slate for Wednesday, 8/22/18. Below is a list of our best MLB DFS picks for pitchers, hitters, and stacks to target in Cash and GPP lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel.

Please note the advice below is relevant for daily fantasy purposes. A player or team might be better or worse from a fantasy perspective than in real life due to matchup, price, and lots of other factors. This is important to consider when constructing a roster. Remember that more than in other sports, variance is a critical part of baseball. Even Mike Trout can go 0-for-4 on a given night, and Max Scherzer can get lit up by an unsuspecting team.

Weather can also play a huge role in MLB DFS on a nightly basis, and lineups are constantly shifting. So always, always check the starting lineups and weather reports when playing an MLB slate.

Extra Inning: $10 entry, $225k guaranteed (DraftKings) – $50,000 to 1st!
Medium 8’s Encore: $88 entry, $300k guaranteed (DraftKings) – $75,000 to 1st!
MLB Rally: $9.99 entry, $115k guaranteed (FanDuel) – 20,000 to 1st!
Grand Slam: $55 entry, $100k guaranteed (FanDuel) – 25,000 to first!

Best MLB DFS Pitchers for August 22, 2018

Jon Gray vs. SDP ($7.8 DK / $8.6 FD)

Jon Gray has been much better since his Minor League stint. He’s allowed two or fewer runs in four of his six starts and pitched into at least the seventh inning in five of those outings. Gray has a 2.83 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts in his last 35.0 IP. Tonight, the Rockies’ ace will face a Padres squad that has the second-highest strikeout rate on the season. Gray fanned seven over seven scoreless against San Diego earlier in the year and had another outing against them where he punched out 11 over six scoreless. He’s a great tournament play as many may shy away from him due to this game being in hitter-friendly Colorado. He’s also showing up in a lot of my optimized lineups on RotoQL.

Carlos Carrasco @ BOS ($9.5 DK / $10.4 FD)

Carlos Carrasco has a tough matchup against the Red Sox, but his ceiling is too high to ignore. Also, because he’ll pitch in Boston, there are five pitchers with a higher price tag than him on DraftKings. On FanDuel, you’ll have to pay top dollar, but he’s averaging the most fantasy points per start on both sites tonight. Carrasco also has the highest projected point total on RotoQL. The Cleveland hurler has three scoreless outings in his last four starts and hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start since June 16. He enters with a 10.11 K/9 and 1.76 BB/9. It’s a risky play you should consider in tournaments. Stephen Strasburg is coming off the DL, and the Jack Flaherty/Walker Buehler matchup certainly could be a pitching duel, but they are both very expensive in what could realistically be a high-scoring game.

Lance Lynn @ MIA ($8.0 DK / $7.5 FD)

It’s not always a great strategy to chase a win, but Lance Lynn is affordable and in a great spot against Miami. It’s not like Lynn hasn’t been good since joining the Yankees. The former Twin allowed only one run over his first 16.2 innings with New York before getting lit up in his last outing at home. Lynn has 27 strikeouts in his last 20.2 innings and has allowed three or fewer runs in seven of his last eight starts. By now we’re well aware of how bad the Marlins’ offense is, but in case you forgot, they rank 29th in wOBA, home runs, and runs scored.

Others to consider: Noah Syndergaard, Clay Buchholz

Best MLB DFS Hitters for August 22, 2018

Eduardo Escobar vs. LAA ($4.9 DK / $4.2 FD)

Eduardo Escobar is hitting .311 in 20 games since being acquired by the Diamondbacks. He has 15 runs, 12 RBI, and has reached base in all but four games. Escobar has a solid chance to get his seventh multi-hit game with Arizona as they’ll face Odrisamer Despaigne. Acquired by the Angels last week, Despaigne allowed seven hits and five runs in his Halos debut, which was his first start since March 31. The former Marlins pitcher has allowed 13 hits and 10 runs in two starts. If 29 hits, 21 runs and a 6.29 ERA in 24.1 innings doesn’t tell you to stack against a pitcher, nothing will. How about a 83.8 contact percentage? Get your D-backs in.

Javier Baez @ DET ($5.0 DK / $3.7 FD)

Javier Baez is the most expensive second basemen on DraftKings and FanDuel. He also has the highest projected point total at his position, according to RotoQL. Baez isn’t even expensive on FD, making him an auto play in Cash. Baez will be up against lefty Francisco Liriano, who has allowed nine runs, four homers, and nine walks in his last three starts. Liriano enters with a brutal 5.36 BB/9 and 5.63 FIP. The Cubs’ second baseman hit .315 vs. southpaws last season and is hitting .301 against them this season.

Nicholas Castellanos vs. CHC ($4.6 DK / $3.6 FD)

Nicholas Castellanos had one heck of a cold spell in July during which he had only three home runs and hit .218. Now, it looks like Castellanos has turned the corner with two home runs and 10 RBI over his last seven games. In there was a 5-for-5 night that included five RBI. The Tigers’ OF is as great as ever against lefties (.397) yet again this season after hitting .292 against them in 2017. His opponent, Jon Lester, has allowed 22 home runs and nine in his last six starts. The Cubs pitcher has given up at least one homer in seven of his last eight outings. Even worse, Lester has allowed at least four runs in four of his last six starts, and at least eight runs in two of those outings.

C.J. Cron vs. KC ($4.2 DK / $3.1 FD)

C.J. Cron goes through these cold spells like most average power hitters, but right now he seems to be feeling it. Cron has two homers in his last three games and a six-game hit streak with three multi-hit games over that span. Cron has 24 home runs on the season and his opponent, Jakob Junis, has given up 26 homers. Junis also has a top 5 hard hit rate (40.5%).

Others to consider: Chris Iannetta, Yadier Molina, Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Rizzo, DJ LeMahieu, Daniel Murphy, David Bote, Anthony Rendon, Willy Adames, Trea Turner, Rhys Hoskins, Juan Soto, David Peralta, Kyle Schwarber, Steven Souza Jr.
