MLB DFS & Lineups & Picks for August 23, 2018

There are four games on the main MLB DFS slate for Thursday, 8/23/18. Below is a list of our best MLB DFS picks for pitchers, hitters, and stacks to target in Cash and GPP lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel.

Please note the advice below is relevant for daily fantasy purposes. A player or team might be better or worse from a fantasy perspective than in real life due to matchup, price, and lots of other factors. This is important to consider when constructing a roster. Remember that more than in other sports, variance is a huge part of baseball. Even Mike Trout can go 0-for-4 on a given night, and Chris Sale can get lit up by a weak team.

Weather can also play a huge role in MLB DFS on a nightly basis, and lineups are constantly shifting. So always, always check the starting lineups and weather reports when playing for an MLB slate. If a game gets rained out, your player gets zero points!

Grand Slam: $55 entry, $60k guaranteed (FanDuel)

Best MLB DFS Pitchers for August 23, 2018

Cole Hamels vs. CIN ($10.4k DraftKings, $9.2k FanDuel)

Clearly invigorated by the move to the Cubs, Cole Hamels has allowed just 2 ER with a 0.88 WHIP over four outings with his new team. The veteran LHP is posting a higher K-Rate (23%) after a down campaign in 2017 and matches up well against the lefty-heavy Reds lineup. Current Reds are 9-for-52 (.173) with 10 Ks in their careers against Hamels, and Joey Votto (leg) is on the DL until at least Sunday. Fading Hamels only really makes sense in GPP formats since the Cubs (-230) are the heaviest favorites on tonight’s slate.

Trevor Cahill @ MIN ($9.2k DraftKings, $8.0k FanDuel)

The Athletics have the hottest offense in baseball with a league-best .356 wOBA over the last 30 days. That’s allowed a steady RHP in Trevor Cahill to put up quality numbers. He’s posted a 9.15 K/9 ratio and .202 BAA to win four of his last five starts and faces a Twins team with the seventh-highest K-Rate (23.1%) over the last month. Cahill is posting a career-high 13.1% swinging strike rate thanks to a changeup that rates 8.8 runs above average, according to Brooks Baseball. He has a 55% ground ball rate in his career and can provide an excellent floor-ceiling combination with a solid projection of 14.7 DraftKings points on RotoQL tonight.

Sean Newcomb @ MIA ($7.8k DraftKings, $7.2k FanDuel)

Sean Newcomb is a SP to target if you want to differentiate from the field in tournaments on such a small slate. He gave up 12 ER over two outings against the Brewers and Rockies, but those are two of the best offenses in baseball against lefties. Miami ranks 27th in collective wOBA (.289) with the third-fewest runs scored (119) when facing LHPs this year. Newcomb recently held the Marlins to 1 ER over 6 strong innings. The 25-year-old Massachusetts native has been better on the road with a 3.39 ERA and a stingy 15.2% line drive rate, while Marlins Park has one of the lowest Run Factors of any stadium in the Majors.

Best MLB DFS Hitters for August 23, 2018

Freddie Freeman @ MIA ($5.0k DraftKings, $4.2k FanDuel)

Marlins RHP Dan Straily has been hit hard in four consecutive starts and was pummeled in an outing at Atlanta on July 31. The Braves have a slew of dangerous lefties capable of tagging him again, including Freddie Freeman. Straily has a 1.71 WHIP, 32.5% line drive rate and a 17% HR/FB ratio when facing lefties this season. And Freeman is 5-for-17 with a HR and 5 walks in his career against Straily. Freeman has a solid floor with a projection of 8.2 DraftKings points on RotoQL tonight.

Kyle Schwarber vs. CIN ($4.2k DraftKings, $3.5k FanDuel)

While Reds RHP Anthony DeSclafani has been pitching well lately, he’s a decent target if you want to use some of the Cubs in GPP formats. DeSclafani is giving up a 2.70 HR/9 ratio and a 24.1% line drive rate when facing lefties. Thus, Kyle Schwarber is a decent bet to dong at hitter-friendly Wrigley Field tonight. The big man has homered twice already this week and boasts a 26.8% HR/FB ratio when facing RHPs this season. Schwarber has a 16.1% BB rate at home, but his upside is in his power stroke.

Nick Martini @ MIN ($3.8k DraftKings, $2.7k FanDuel)

As mentioned above, the A’s have a collective wOBA (.356) over the last month. That makes them a great stacking option. Khris Davis is on a homer tear, and Matt Chapman is another good option in a RvR matchup against Twins starter Kohl Stewart. The 23-year-old has been wild in his first two MLB starts and allowed RHB to hit .328 in the Minors this season. Nick Martini may be a LHB, but he’s finding his stride with a .322 average and .911 OPS since earning steady playing time after the ASB. He’s posting a 14.7% BB rate during that span and could reach base a few times if Stewart remains wild.

Other hitters to consider: Khris Davis, Eugenio Suarez, Marcus Semien, Ozzie Albies, Nick Markakis, Willy Adames, Mallex Smith, Brett Phillips, Lucas Duda
