MLB DFS & Lineups & Picks for August 9, 2018

There are six games on the main MLB DFS slate for Thursday, 8/9/18. Below is a list of our best MLB DFS picks for pitchers, hitters, and stacks to target in Cash and GPP lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel.

Please note the advice below is relevant for daily fantasy purposes. A player or team might be better or worse from a fantasy perspective than in real life due to matchup, price, and lots of other factors. This is important to consider when constructing a roster. Remember that more than in other sports, variance is a huge part of baseball. Even Mike Trout can go 0-for-4 on a given night, and Chris Sale can get lit up by a weak team.

Weather can also play a huge role in MLB DFS on a nightly basis, and lineups are constantly shifting. So always, always check the starting lineups and weather reports when playing for an MLB slate. If a game gets rained out, your player gets zero points!

Best MLB DFS Pitchers for August 9, 2018

James Paxton @ HOU ($10.6k DraftKings, $10.0k FanDuel)

At a significantly lower price tag than his adversary (Justin Verlander), James Paxton offers similar upside with the potential to lead all pitchers on Thursday’s short slate. Houston is normally a lineup that mashes lefties, but with George Springer (thumb), Jose Altuve (knee,) and Carlos Correa (back) inactive, the Astros are posting a pedestrian .302 wOBA with the fourth-lowest batting average (.222) in the Majors over the last 14 days. Paxton is 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA and a 9.17 K/9 ratio over three outings against Houston this season and is missing a ton of bats with a 13.8% swinging strike rate and 32% K-Rate this season.

J.A. Happ vs. TEX ($9.3k DraftKings, $8.4k FanDuel)

After battling a nasty illness, J.A. Happ appears poised to make his second start for a Yankees team that must be at its best to keep pace with Boston. Red Sox starter Rick Porcello is a bit safer in this price range today, but Happ arguably has more upside with a projection of 22.9 DraftKings points on RotoQL. The crafty lefty is posting a 9.90 K/9 ratio with a career-low 15.9% line drive rate and matches up very well against the boom-bust Rangers offense. Current Rangers are 13-for-74 (.176) with 22 Ks and a weak .454 OPS in their careers against Happ. The Yanks (-215) are huge favorites at home tonight with Texas throwing rookie Ariel Jurado, explaining Happ’s hefty projection.

Ross Stripling @ COL ($7.2k DraftKings, $7.0k FanDuel)

Another capable SP available at a just-off-the-DL discount, Ross Stripling is worth consideration as a cheap option tonight. The third-year RHP has seemingly put it all together with a 7.93 K/BB ratio and 2.84 xFIP this season. Stripling’s numbers took a hit when he struggled with a toe injury in his last two outings, but he’s apparently fully healthy and won’t require a rehab start before taking the mound at Coors Field. The thin air in Denver raises some concerns for a pitcher with a 48.6% usage rate of his breaking pitches, but Stripling has been lights out with a 31.1% K-Rate on the road against LHBs. He’s, therefore, handled most Rockies hitters outside of superstar RHB Nolan Arenado.

Other pitchers to consider: Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello

Best MLB DFS Hitters for August 9, 2018

Mookie Betts @ TOR ($5.9k DraftKings, $4.9k FanDuel)

Mookie Betts leads all hitters with a projection of 16 FanDuel points tonight, according to models on RotoQL. His teammate J.D. Martinez is right behind him at 15.7 projected FD points, and of course the red-hot Red Sox lineup is one of the elite stacks to consider against rookie LHP Robert Borucki. Betts is hitting .359 with a 1.192 OPS and .395 ISO mark when facing lefties this year and has two triples and a walk over three plate appearances against Borucki. Boston’s MVP candidate has 3 XBH, 2 HRs, and 4 SB at Toronto’s Rogers Centre this season. That elite dual threat potential justifies his lofty price tag.

Justin Turner @ COL ($4.7k DraftKings, $3.9k FanDuel)

Rockies southpaw Tyler Anderson managed to shut down the Dodgers in a road start in late June, but he was pounded for 5 ER over 5 IP when last he faced them at Coors Field. Now, the Dodgers have added lefty-killers Brian Dozier and Manny Machado, while Anderson will have to contend with his nemesis in Justin Turner. Even in a shutout performance, Anderson allowed two singles to Turner on June 29. The 3B is now 11-for-21 with 3 doubles and a HR in his career against Anderson. Plus, he’s hitting .327 with a .408 wOBA off LHPs this season.

Joey Wendle vs. BAL ($4.1k DraftKings, $2.9k FanDuel)

The Rays are worth stacking tonight with a couple of red-hot hitters, including speedy OF Mallex Smith. Big 1B Jake Bauers is also worth a look in GPPs, while Joey Wendle is cheap enough to consider in all formats. The 28-year-old infielder is 15-for-38 (.395) over his last 11 appearances and faces a RHP in David Hess who has been routinely lit up this year. Hess is coughing up a 2.36 HR/9 ratio with a 6.37 FIP when facing LHBs in 2018. Wendle is making solid contact with a 23% line drive rate against righties and is projected for a solid 8.8 DraftKings points tonight, according to models on RotoQL.

Brandon Crawford vs. PIT ($3.8k DraftKings, $2.8k FanDuel)

When Brandon Crawford starts to get rolling, he can produce like few shortstops in baseball. He’s starting to heat up again and faces a weak RHP tonight in Ivan Nova, who is awful against the platoon. Lefties are hitting .293 with a 1.72 HR/9 ratio against Nova this season, and Crawford is 5-for-11 with 3 XBH in his career against him. While he struggled badly in the first week of August, Crawford found his groove during a home series against the Astros and will look to keep rolling at AT&T Park tonight.

Other hitters to consider: J.D. Martinez, Manny Machado, Corey Dickerson, Mallex Smith, Steve Pearce, Gleyber Torres, David Freese, Andrew McCutchen, Aledmys Diaz, Buster Posey, Willy Adames
